St. Francis Of Assisi, A New View, Print by Adron for sale

St. Francis of Assisi block print in black.
St Francs A new View, Print by Adron for sale by artist.
My photography made it look darker and grey but the paper is really white. Below is a modified exposure, as seen at my Society6 store.

Here is a hand made print of "St, Francis of Assisi, a new view." I call it a new view because after reading his biography I became convinced that St Francis was a joyful even playful though devout person. All the images of him are very pious and reverent but I search in vain for an image of him with a smile. So I created my own. He is smiling gently with a contentment that comes from piety and the inner joy that comes from faith. In his hand is a sparrow. This composition went through several versions before I got it to where I was happy with it.

This is a "Cut Block Print." I cut the foam block with knives and mount it to acrylic sheet. Using commercial ink I roll ink on the block and press paper onto it. This is the traditional print method. The paper is Green that is made out of recycled content but still is acid-free.

This can be purchased at my Society6 store see the link to the right.

SUNFLOWER HAND MADE PRINT 14X11

Sunflower Print by Artist Adron

This handmade print of a sunflower is a real beauty.

It takes 5 blocks to run a project like this one plate for each color. I carve the blocks by hand. With each new block I have to keep going back to make sure they will all register correctly so the picture won't have large gaps and huge color overlaps. I have to ink each block and print them individually on the paper and make sure they are dry before I go to the next color. Since I am doing these by hand it takes a long time. It took a day to print 10 and I had to discard two for smudges.

I have a revised version this in watercolor and acrylic at my online art store. You can see it here.

Celtic Cross Hand Made 14x11 Print by Adron

Here is a project I worked on for a couple of weeks. It is a "wood cut" print except I used an acrylic sheet to cut it this is the 21st century anyway. Though I used modern materials the technique is still the traditional approach of cutting an image in a surface, rolling ink over it and pressing paper to it to transfer the ink to the paper thus making a mirror image of the plate.

The design took a long time to work out and I made a few trips to the internet and book sources to get the classic Celtic shape and then tried to design original knot motif. I say tried - you will recognize at least two classic Celtic knots patterns.

I redid this print on watercolor paper and then converted it as a digital print for my online store.

Somber Bay Lighthouse limited edition hand made print

Here is a print that I cut and produced by hand of a lighthouse at a place called Somber Bay. Lighthouses are so classic and even romantic. This is just a black and white print.

Hand made Print Somber Bay Lighthouse.
I designed and cut this 11x14 "Wood Block" print myself. It is a lighthouse a on a rock at Somber Bay with a dock and a stair leading up to it and a pier on the left side. It has a nice balance between the white paper and black ink. There is a variety of texture and effects.

Below is a better image of the print that I digitized for my Society6 store, available framed and unframed.

Post Abstract Portrait Isaiah 1:17

I wanted to continue experimenting with abstract and portraiture as a combination while keeping to a faith theme.

Here I chose the face first by combining different photos of hair, pose, coloring and expression and then contemplated what Faith message I could attach to it. I felt the Bible verse from the Prophet Isaiah Chapter 1 verse 17 matched and even better since it has references to colors of white, crimson and scarlet. The verse reads, "Come now and let us reason together saith the Lord; though your sins be as scarlet they shall be white as snow, though they be red like crimson they shall be as wool."

I decided to try to leave lots of areas white such as the hair and parts of the face. To do this I used the wax from a candle and drew the hair so the watercolor wash would be repelled by it: and areas of the flesh I covered with random pieces of blue painter's tape. I used red ink for the lettering and the low-lights in the hair.

The face was begun with watercolor pencil then washed over to give a soft blend. I added more random pieces of blue painter's tape to the face to give the fractured broken look. I did the water colors of blue, red, purple, and yellow in layers of wash. I was hoping to combine the ideas of sin and cleansing with the areas of red and blue. At the top I introduced a warm yellow, I know it is an obvious statement of heaven but I am a believer and had to make the point.

Some splatters of red was the last step to finish the project. I am very happy with the results.

From first study sketch to completion was about three weeks

Abstract Watercolor Portrait

Heart of Stone
 a portrait with abstract

I was teaching a class to home school students about painting in abstract. I enjoyed some of the lesson so much that I began a series of paintings using some of the technique.  It was a surprise to me to discover just how much planing and work the abstract really turns out to be. I used pen and ink for the face and then used water color pencils to give it a few pale shadows. There is a verse of scripture in pen and ink.  The water color was done in several sessions and built up gradually. I glued crumpled tissue on in some areas and gave more layers of water color.  The theme of heart of stone turning into a heart of flesh is reinforced with the earring that cascades down from the copper one to red one. The evolution of the painting was completed when I scribbled some of the words of the verse as background to the abstract portion of the portrait.
