The Sanctuary Bridge at Wild Lake.

Here is a lovely painting I did on location at Wild Lake, in Columbia MD. It is at the end of Wild Lake that is set aside as a sanctuary, so I titled it Sanctuary Bridge.

I painted this in September, 2011, on several mornings. The first morning there were some workers in the area making so much noise with chainsaws I almost packed up and left, but I am glad that I didn't.

I wanted to focus on the bridge that looked like it was shyly peeking around the bend. Beyond this point the path go up a steep hill at the top of which is a playground and a vista of the lake. I sat next to the path while painting this bridge and many folks came by and offered encouragement. One couple offered to pose for the picture but when I told them how long one of my paintings took to finish they responded that they doubted the bridge would be there when I finished.

I did a lot of editing and left out details in the interest of having a painting that had a nice composition.  This is the tricky part of painting on location. One of the other concerns I have is the problem of the shifting light. I had to return at the same time each day to capture the light; and even in the two or three hour sessions the light would change so much as the sun moved across the sky that I had to fight the sense that I needed to revise the entire painting.

I left this piece rest in my basement studio for a few weeks and then made a few touches here and there but nothing major it is essentially painted on location. I am very happy with the results and I am sure anyone who hangs this on their wall will be happy too.

Painted Props for an Event.

Here are two "Pirate Treasure Chest" I painted for a little girl's birthday party. The mom gave me two Styrofoam coolers to paint.  I spent many hours on these. I primed them with off white latex paint. Over the primer I used fan brushes, liner brushes and others to make the wood grain.  I made handles out of rope and hinges out of cardboard. On top I painted images of two famous ships using acrylic paint. on the sides I painted other images of sea legends.  The front of one has a light house and the front of the other has two dolphins leaping out of the water.

Normally I would charge $20.00 an hour for a project like this for a stage production or social event.

I think I over did the projects a little bit.Everyone who saw them were overwhelmed.

It is ashamed to do so much work for something that will only be used for one day and then discarded. That is the give and take of painting props and sets for theater and events. There is no shame in doing your best job no matter how big or how little the project is.

If you have an event and need some prop painted get in touch.

Vista from the farm museum, oil on canvas

Vista from the Farm Museum. I began to paint this en plein aire, meaning outdoors on location. It was a lovely day and a very inspiring place to paint from. The morning was a little hazy and I tried to capture that in the distance. It turned out to be a hot day but fortunately, I was in the shade of a tree. I painted an underpainting with a scrumbling technique. Then worked out the values and hues.
The composition is one you don't see often since most people want to have a road or something leading into the picture which is the common philosophy, and maybe I was wrong to go against the grain but I feel the project turned out beautifully.

It is a cool picture with a lot of greens and blues. It is done with a lot of dots and dabs, another thing that is not in vogue these days but I think it was very effective in creating a harmony in the picture. I finished the painting in my home studio the following week from some photos I took while there.

The size is 11x14. it is oil on canvas and would be a welcoming peaceful scene on any wall in your home.

Virgina Farm, Landscape in oil on canvas.

Rural Virgina Farm. This painting took me a long time to paint but I am very happy with the final product. It is from a picture of a farm in Rural Virgina. It is oil on 16x20 canvas. I painted it in post pointillist style where I do an under painting to get the values and composition in place. Then I apply dabs of color to the over painting. It looks beautiful. This took most of the spring and summer to finish. Some admirers have commented that it is a very peaceful picture, which is what I was going for.

Eliots Oak Bike Path Original Oil Painting on Canvas

Painting of the bike path off of Eliots Oak Rd. in Columbia MD. Oil on 11 x 14 canvas.  I walk down this path often it is one of my favorite places. There is a bridge and these cool huge boulders.  The path passes a play ground and enters a wood.  I painted this picture over several weeks were I took my easel and canvas to the spot and worked on it; I finished it in my studio. The greens and blues are a livid contrast to the warm browns of the boulders.

This painting would be a beautiful addition to any collection of fine art. Price is $175.00. Get in touch with me to arrange to see this in my home studio or to get a quote on shipping.

Books, Box, and Maddy. Still life in Modern Style, for sale by artist

Oil on 16x20 Canvas. A classic theme treated in a contemporary manner.

This is one of my favorite still life paintings. It includes a cameo of my daughter Maddy.  It is fun for me to intorduce a little portrait in a painting since it makes the still life more personal, especially if other elements of the painting are connected somehow in the life of the person it becomes more than a still life and more than a portrait.

In this the paint is applied heavy with bright colors and deep shadows. Here I am treating a still life almost like a landscape. It is a beautiful painting.

Price is $400.00 Contact me if you want to see this in my home studio, or for a quote on shipping.
