Illuminated Text Hand Painted Bible Verse Philippians 4:6-7

This is a little project I did first as a drawing to be a coloring page for kids and adults who love this verse of scripture, see it here; but I liked it so much I thought that I would color it in myself. It serves as an illustration of what can be done.  I did this in multiple mediums. The lettering and most of the embellishments were watercolor. I use fine tipped markers for some parts and acrylic for others.

Watercolor does not scan so well since a lot of the effects gets lost, so after scanning the picture into my computer I cleaned it up a little bit digitally and redid the face of the woman in prayer.

It looks nicer in real life than it does here and I think it will frame it and give it as a gift.

Illuminated Text Hand Painted. Psalm 139:14

This is a project I did first as a page for people to print and color. (See it at this link ), but I was so pleased with the way it turned out I decided to go ahead and color it and post it to my art store, (see link below).

The text is, "I praise you for I am fearfully and wonderfully made, wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well." from the Bible, Psalm 139:14.

I traced the original coloring page onto watercolor paper. It was done in acrylic, paint, watercolor and fine tipped marker to colorize it. My brushes were all small but the one I used the most was a liner or signature brush.

The lettering was first, in blue acrylic. Black would have been traditional but I wanted to make something more colorful. Next was the red in acrylic for the border.  In many examples of ancient pages and red is a common accent color. The hearts have a little violet mixed around the edges to give some definition from the red boarder. White primer gesso gave the hearts a little highlight. The yellow and brown were watercolor. Last was edging with an ink brush marker.

The original picture I drew did not have the vines going around the inside border but the colors were all so hot I felt it needed some cooling down. Before I painted the green vines I placed tracing paper over the project and did a sketch to see if it would work. Even with sketching I wasn't quite sure it would work out, but went ahead anyway. I had to use white priming gesso to cover over the red where the green leaves would go above so the red would not bleed through. I think it looks pretty good.
