Pen And Ink Drawing of a Man Playing A Guitar.

Here is a drawing in pen and ink of a man playing the guitar. I did it first as part of a drawing lesson for some students. It turned out to be a good lesson and I made a little worksheet to go with it for the future, you can follow the link below to see the drawing lesson.

The picture is of a man sitting in a chair with a large guitar in his lap that he is playing while his head is down as he is listening to the music he is creating.

I had to draw this picture several times before I got it right and still feel it is not done, but I have to move onto other projects or I will lose my mind. I had to use a tracing box with this one where I have a lite inside and it illuminates the image so you can trace over it. The pose was easy but I had a little trouble with the anatomy. I like the overall expression of the picture of a man at peace and sharing his music of peace with others.

It is a very nice picture and I am very happy with it.

Watercolor of Mulan the Ninja Girl

This is a little illustration I did to show the possibilities of watercolor illustration to my art students. It was inspired by a printable drawing worksheet I did last year of Mulan from the story of the Chinese girl who took her father's place in the army. I combined the Japanese ninja into the project to make it unique.

Mulan the Ninja Girl Watercolor Fantasy

I mostly use small brushes and get a lot of texture in my work. Since it is more of an illustration rather than a piece of art I did not add black to my color but keep the color brilliant and used black sparingly as a feature to define the lines and add drama. After laying down the color in the landscape I washed over it with clear water to blend and muddy the hue a little to give contrast to the portraiture of the warrior and the dragon.

The paper I used was not quality and the wash for the sky went badly, the paper began to warp and the color took on a speckled look- not what you want in a sky. So after it dried I gave it a "Glaze" with watered down gesso. It looked better in real life than in the scan I took.

I have this as a printable line drawing that can be printed out and colored. To see it CLICK HERE.

Watercolor painting of a dancer on one toe

Here is a watercolor I did of a woman who was featured in a magazine.  I just so loved the dramatic pose she had. And I loved her dark skin and since I haven't done much with the darker flesh hues I had to give it a try.

The paper size is 9x12.

Watercolor of a Dancer on one toe.

I took a long time sketching her in.  Normally I do not erase or lift out mistakes since they seem to get lost in all the washes and layers of color; but this time I drew and redrew the figure a few times to get all the subtle lines in the right places, and did a lot of erasing. Nothing fixes a bad drawing.

I started with a light wash of orange on the flesh, then after that dried I added senna to the middle values and then used umber for the dark areas.  It was necessary to go over it all again with a little clear wash to smooth out the transitions from light to dark areas.

I could have done more with the background but I just so loved the form of the dancer that she was all I wanted to paint.  It was hard to get the gradual changes in values for the shadows and still keep the colors true.

Painting a Mural In Columbia Md. Jesus with the message of Let the Children Come to Me

Here are two images of the mural I painted at South Columbia Baptist Church on Guilford Rd in Columbia Md.

I sketched the mural on Feburary 17 2014 and began painting the next day. The mural took eight months to complete and was finished on October 24 2014. Working on weekends and evenings did not give a lot of opportunity to make a quick job of it.

Some work was done by volunteers who were also contributing on their free time. These were teenagers who were members of the National Arts Honor Society. They have won awards and have had work shown in government buildings in the area.  It was an opportunity to mentor the young artist and it was a blessing for me to do it. I would gladly do another mural with them.

Let the Children Come to Me, Extended view of the mural.

The mural was painted in the lobby to the nursery area and wraps around a corridor. It is over 200 square feet. The wall surface was cinder-block.  The image is the classic of Jesus welcoming children to him. There is a quote from the Bible. "Let the children come to me." It is paraphrased.

The paint was Glidden semigloss for the majority of the work but the animals were painted with Liquitex and Golden acrylic which gives more detail.

I drew the composition myself with Jesus holding an infant, since the nursery faces this wall those caring for the infants might be encouraged. The lower section is filled with animals which engage the toddlers and preschool aged children who are there.

Contact me for a quote on a mural in your place of worship business or home.

Quick Sketch While At The Cafe

There is never enough time to do art. So I try to do art wherever or whenever I can force it out of a situation. We were listening to some jazz at a Cafe in Wild Lake MD. and not far from me was a young man who apparently was not into jazz and had fallen asleep.  I pulled out my sketchbook from my coat pocket and a trusty HB pencil and did a quick sketch of him.

I wanted to keep the white of his shirt as a focus feature so after lightly coloring the background I rubbed it smooth with my finger.  His straight black hair was tousled and was fun to sketch. The sketchbook is about 3x5 inches big. I recommend all artist carry one; there are more times I wished I had one on hand to do a quick sketch than I care to remember.

Not too much can be said about practicing the quick sketch.

Drawing of Model With An Attitude

This is the wooden pose-able model of the human figure we use for sketching in class. I asked one of my students to give it a casual pose. I think it was more of a saucy attitude. This was a quick sketch and drawn in about 8 minutes. It helps loosen the students up a bit.

Pencil Sketch of Model With an Attitude.
I drew this with an hb pencil and then finished it with a 4b just to deepen the shadows a bit.

You might thing drawing these models over and over is boring but so is practicing scales for a musician. You know you are getting better and so it is worth it.

Quick drawing of wooden manikin

This is a quick sketch I did while teaching a class of home school students. It was drawn in about six minutes. The purpose was to get loose and not worry about making every line perfect but to rough out a project quickly. Our medium was pen and ink or markers, I used a fine tipped maker  nothing fancy, and I drew this while standing in front of the class holding the sketchbook up for the kids to see.

The kids all did very well. We have been doing things like this all year and they are getting good at it.

I asked one of the kids to pose the model as a casual pose. This is what she decided on.

Wind Nymph In Charcoal

This is a charcoal study I did to work out the composition and design of a watercolor project. I am contemplating.  In my resource material the pose was so simple yet dramatic, I could not resist doing a sketch of it. I changed the hair and clothing. I liked the lights and the darks caused by the light from the right. I toned down the paper a half shade to bring out the light against the front of the figure. The area behind the figure is so much dead space I felt it needed something so I added the smudging of the wind.

Wind Nymph Study in Charcoal.
Someone looking at it may say I did a bad job on the face, and they would be right, but this is just a study that I hope will lead to a bigger more satisfying project. This has no commercial value, it is just for my own amusement.
