Mixed Media Tulips

This is a little painting of tulips I did one evening. It is done on watercolor paper with a combination of watercolor, gesso and felt-tipped markers.

HOW TO PAINT IN MIXED MEDIA
I did a few sketches first and then washed in the background with blues, I was trying to keep the background busy. Then I used watercolor for the greens. The flower was done in a mix of gesso and Alizarin Crimson watercolor. I used a few touches of purple for the shadows. The last step was black gesso with a signature brush to give it the outline effect.

I admit it is a little mix of primitive and modern but I think it makes a nice picture.

Mixed Media Art, Daisies Fantasy

This picture is a happy and colorful creation. It is mixed media. I combined watercolor, ink, acrylic, and gesso in this project. I love daisies and have some in my garden. I call it a fantasy since I was working more from imagination than any real flowers.

I drew it a few times to get the design the way I wanted it and then traced it onto 140 lb watercolor paper. The first paint was black gesso for the outlines. The background was next in watercolor using a hurried splashy brush stroke. The greens were next with acrylic. I used white gesso for the flowers and yellow acrylic for the centers. I had to go back over the black again since some washes went over it. I added more black between the leaves to give depth and balance to the flowers.

I think mixing the mediums give it a more vibrant appearance.

I am personally very happy with this little gem. I hope you like it too.

No Gremlins Allowed Poster Art

Some weeks ago I had a few minutes at work with some down time and being always at war with the office equipment I decided to add a little humor with some of my art. The result was the "This is a gremlin free zone" design.  I did it as a drawing then colored it with some of the markers that were around the office.

Even though I had to draw it several times I am very happy with the cute, angry, and frustrated demon. Cartoon is not my thing but I feel I pulled it off. This little devil is a mix of many fictional imps that have been in media over the years.

Later I thought it would be a nice subject for the kids to color in for like Halloween.

Then I redid it for sale on my online art store. I had a lot of fun playing with markers and using clear water to blend the markers. It turned out to be a nice technique for the devil. For contrast, I did the "not allowed" symbol in pencil and blended it with a stub. The lettering started out with a black marker but didn't scan evenly so I had to go back over it with black gesso.

You can see it at my online store here.

Blue Jay bird in Multi-medium Drawing

Blue jay

A little doddle I did using crayola markers, sharpies, and watercolor pencils. I drew it in sharpie first for all the black areas. Next I used watercolor pencil on the blue of the feathers, after that I used the cheep crayolya markers for the autumn leaves. Last I gave it a wash with water to let the cheep markers bleed, and water color pencils to blend.

I was hoping for a more abstract effect but became too infatuated with the source material so I ended up being more representational than intended. The background with the markers bleed was more of what I was going for.

Painting a Mural In Columbia Md. Jesus with the message of Let the Children Come to Me

Here are two images of the mural I painted at South Columbia Baptist Church on Guilford Rd in Columbia Md.

I sketched the mural on Feburary 17 2014 and began painting the next day. The mural took eight months to complete and was finished on October 24 2014. Working on weekends and evenings did not give a lot of opportunity to make a quick job of it.

Some work was done by volunteers who were also contributing on their free time. These were teenagers who were members of the National Arts Honor Society. They have won awards and have had work shown in government buildings in the area.  It was an opportunity to mentor the young artist and it was a blessing for me to do it. I would gladly do another mural with them.

Let the Children Come to Me Mural painted in the nursery at South Columbia Baptist Church.

Let the Children Come to Me, Extended view of the mural.

The mural was painted in the lobby to the nursery area and wraps around a corridor. It is over 200 square feet. The wall surface was cinder-block.  The image is the classic of Jesus welcoming children to him. There is a quote from the Bible. "Let the children come to me." It is paraphrased.

The paint was Glidden semigloss for the majority of the work but the animals were painted with Liquitex and Golden acrylic which gives more detail.

I drew the composition myself with Jesus holding an infant, since the nursery faces this wall those caring for the infants might be encouraged. The lower section is filled with animals which engage the toddlers and preschool aged children who are there.

Contact me for a quote on a mural in your place of worship business or home.

Illustration of an octopus

I was doing a worksheet for some kids and it had a drawing of an octopus. I drew this to illustrate the subject of the drawing lesson.

This was drawn in pencil and then traced over with a sharpie. I used the sharpie to texture the octopus and give the sense of roundness by using a dot technique.

Illustration from how to draw an octopus lesson.

I wanted to give it more than just a black and white rendering so I used some cheap crayola (r) markers to color it and the sandy ground below it. The markers were too dark but since they are washable I took a brush and water and gave each area a wash, the dye then spread and lightened up a bit.

If you want to see the free how to draw an octopus worksheet follow this link to my other blog.

I am mostly happy with it and feel satisfied that I found a use for all of my kid's old markers.
