Beautiful Painting of Tulips and Blossoms

This is a beautiful painting of a floral with tulips and blossoms, and I am very proud of it.

It is a picture of some Tulips with some blossoms and greens. The background colors are lavenders and rose colors. There are a lot of places that I put in black and dark hues to give it contrast and a modern feel.

I spent a couple of weeks on it. People think that artist just slap paint onto a surface with accidental ease and it is somehow art. But the fact is, even something like this picture, that appears to be loose and freely executed, is the result of many hours of work involving hundreds of decisions and reliance years of developing.one's skill.

I enjoyed painting it, even if I stayed up past midnight many times to get it done.

I have enabled some products at my Society6 store that are very nice, see the link below.

Finished Painting of The Still Life With Flowers in Red Vaise and Oil Lamp

I set this picture aside for a long time while working on other projects, such as writing and illustrating a book of poems.

I finally found time to get back to the easel and finish this one up. I made some of the colors deeper, and I brought out some details, especially the leaves. It was tricky to finish this in my basement with artificial light when I started it on a friend's patio outside.

It was painted on canvas board, and you can still see some of the cloth texture.

I wanted to have a sloppy style with bold contrasts in colors and drama between the lights and darks.

I am thrilled with how the painting turned out.

Mixed Media Tulips

This is a little painting of tulips I did one evening. It is done on watercolor paper with a combination of watercolor, gesso and felt-tipped markers.

HOW TO PAINT IN MIXED MEDIA
I did a few sketches first and then washed in the background with blues, I was trying to keep the background busy. Then I used watercolor for the greens. The flower was done in a mix of gesso and Alizarin Crimson watercolor. I used a few touches of purple for the shadows. The last step was black gesso with a signature brush to give it the outline effect.

Tulips in Mixed Media
I admit it is a little mix of primitive and modern but I think it makes a nice picture.

Mixed Media Art, Daisies Fantasy

This picture is a happy and colorful creation. It is mixed media. I combined watercolor, ink, acrylic, and gesso in this project. I love daisies and have some in my garden. I call it a fantasy since I was working more from imagination than any real flowers.

I drew it a few times to get the design the way I wanted it and then traced it onto 140 lb watercolor paper. The first paint was black gesso for the outlines. The background was next in watercolor using a hurried splashy brush stroke. The greens were next with acrylic. I used white gesso for the flowers and yellow acrylic for the centers. I had to go back over the black again since some washes went over it. I added more black between the leaves to give depth and balance to the flowers.

I think mixing the mediums give it a more vibrant appearance.

I am personally very happy with this little gem. I hope you like it too.

Simple Watercolor Floral Still Life, Two Cone flowers

This is a little painting about 8 inches by 5.  I did it originally as a study for an art lesson I was giving to a youth, but just got so involved with it that I kept working it over after the lesson. It is something that is simple and that is what is appealing. It is nice and refreshing to see something simple for a change.

Cone-flowers In A Jar

My wife has this little glass jar, I think it once held syrup from Maine or something. She sometimes puts one or two flowers from the beautiful garden she has planted into it and sets it in the kitchen.

Watercolor Of Dogwood Tree Blossoms.

Here is a little watercolor I did of some dogwood tree blossoms near my house. I love spring time and the many flowers that bloom in Maryland.

Dogwood blossoms watercolor by Adron.
It was painted one evening when I was too tired to do anything else.

I started with some photos I took and using several to get ideas I created a composition and then spent  about an hour sketching it before painting.

I felt a little uneasy about the design so I started with the background blue to help finalize the composition.  It was harder than I thought to get the blues all the same value in all the different areas that were separated by branches or other structures of the tree. I started the leaves with a wash of yellow, then brushed in green and finished with blue for the darker areas.

The branches were dry brushed and done with a liner brush.

I used a liner brush a lot in the flower.  There was a lot of blending of blues and colors to make the shadows and curves of the flowers. I kept going too far with teh values and had to blot color out so it wouldn't be too dark.

I think it is a very nice painting.

Quick Sketch While At The Restaurant.

I try to always have a small sketchbook with me so I can doodle or sketch when the opportunity arises. It is easy to carry a small one in pocket with a pencil or pen. This sketch book is about 3 inches by 5 inches. I used a sharpie.

It is a sketch of a garden planter in the corner of a plaza where we were having lunch. I started with a light pencil and then went over it with a sharpie. The foreground was boring poured concrete but I thought it would be more interesting with flagstones.

Watercolor Painting of Orchid

I bought this orchid plant for a model to use in a class.  After the class I put in my room and decided to make it a subject of some art so I get my monies worth out of it. I could always use the practice.

This is watercolor. It is a very simple picture. I am not happy with the photography it is more brilliant in real life and the blues are less teal in the actual picture.

Watercolor of a Rose

I hate to stay inside all day on a nice day, so I took my watercolor stuff and went out to the deck and looked around. My wife's garden is a joy and source of much inspiration. There was a rose in a big planter that I felt needed to have a portrait done.

Portrait of a Rose in My Wife's Garden, Watercolor.

The area behind it was dark and I wanted to capture that as an area of contrast but not make it all flat so I did several splattery washes. I started with yellow then added forest green over that letting the colors blend a little. After that dried I splashed down some ultramarine blue which deepened the values a little but not enough so I finished with a little alizarian crimson with violet to get the darkest areas.

The fence behind give the composition interest and a reference to a place and not just a rose sitting on a page. I did a lot of blues and brown with a liner brush and other small brushes on the fence and then when I was satisfied with the amount of medium I gave the areas a clear wash to take away some of the edge.

The rose stem and leaves were more drawn than painted. I used smallest brushes and liner brushes on it. I used the lightest values of yellow and then went to green over most of the yellow just leaving highlights showing. The darkest areas were green mixed with crimson and a little ultramarine blue.

It was a nice afternoon well spent.

Watercolor Sketch Of Flowers in Cracked Urn.

My wife has had a good year growing flowers so I did portrait of one in the urn in the back yard. This urn has a gashing crack on the lower half that is gorgeous and horrid at once. It makes the greatest focus in the composition.

This is a sketch not really a painting since it was done quickly and with minimal effort.

The Cracked Urn

It was so hot outside that my watercolors keep drying on my palette as quickly as I whetted them. I set up an umbrella to work underneath but that was only a little help. The sun was so bright on the paper that my eyes were watering, I had to hold the paper close to me under the umbrella. This was handy since I was literally splashing water and medium on the paper I was able to turn the paper quickly and let the medium flow together. The nice thing was that the washes dried quickly and I was able to add layers on without too much delay.

The urn was my interest and I spent more time on that than the rest of the piece

Portrait of Tree Blossom, Pencil Sketch

I drew this while standing under some bushy tree that had these beautiful five fingered blossoms. It was a lesson teaching some kids how to draw outdoors.

Pencil Sketch of Tree Blossom

These blossoms do not last so drawing had to be done quickly; as they were being sketched the petals began drooping and wilting.

This was drawn in pencil and just a little charcoal in the deepest dark areas. I did a lot of rubbing on the background to stain the paper so the petals were bright. There was a lot of blending in this project but not so much that it lost the effect of being a drawing. There was a lot of play between light and dark so there was one against the other for contrast. The contrast between the smooth rounded petals and the rough jagged edged leaves was beautiful and I really wanted to capture it which took some effort and constant critique . It was fun playing with the different values of grey and going from the very light, almost white, to the very dark, almost black.

I could have worked on it for another two hours but I have to get on to other projects, and I really want to make my drawings look like a drawing.

Watercolor Painting of Wildflowers

This is a painting of some wildflowers I did while on vacation. These look like miniature poppies or buttercups. They grow in the sun next to the road or in open fields.

Watercolor Painting of Wildflowers

I did a quick sketch and then did a wet wash around the flowers in a very very pale yellow green. After the first wash dried I did a second a little darker and deeper green lower down leaving the upper right as it was. A third and forth wash each darker than before was added, each time going around the flower. I dabbed in some yellows and browns to break up the color a bit.

The yellow of the flower was done in stages starting with the light color and going to the darker more orange and red.

The horizontal leaves were an afterthought. I used a liner brush and clear water with a paper towel to lift out the color, it left a slight stain of green which is OK. I just added the darker green for shadow.

I am mostly happy with it but think it is a little too monochromatic and I should have put in a rock or some thing near the bottom. There is always next time!

Watercolor Of Wilderness Flowers

This is a watercolor painting I did of some flowers in the forest in Maine where we went on vacation. These blossoms grow under the shady trees. They have a star pattern of four petals surrounded by four or six leaves.

Watercolor of Forest Flowers

After a quick sketch I started with a wet drip in technique, where I dab watery color into the wet paper. I used layers this way to try to get the texture of the soil and the look of the leaves. It was hard waiting for the the paint to dry between layers. I used dabbing with the water to give the soft random texture. I tried to balance the cool colors of the greens with the warmer browns of the soil and added some reds and purples to the soil to warm it up a bit.

The flowers were white and I didn't just want to leave them blank so I used a very pale wash of watercolor and drew the shapes with a signature brush on the petals.

I am very happy with it, it was a pleasant hour of painting.

Chokeberry Flowers, Handmade Print

Chokeberry flower.
This is a mono print, a handmade one of a kind image.

Chokeberry,  Monoprint,  edition of 1 by Adron.

I made this by drawing directly on the ink with a pencil while it was on the ink-glass then pressed paper onto it. This is not the normal way of print making, at least that I know, normally you would cut a block of wood, linoleum, or foam and then ink the block then press the paper onto the block. It allows you to make many editions of the same image. The block can be re-cut for additional colors and effects, but the mono print does not offer that opportunity.

I think it would have been more effective if I had a different tool other than the pencil that I used to draw the picture with. Maybe a wider or duller instrument would have given more variety in the lines, and more interest in the picture.

I am happy with the results and will consider framing it.

Garden Watercolor: Gloryosia Daisies

This is a picture I painted of some golden daisies in my wife's garden.

Gloryosia Daisies watercolor by Adron.
Watercolor paint is the perfect medium for painting flowers. I painted this one afternoon. They are Gloryosia Daisies, very beautiful flowers with deep colors.

It was an extremely hot afternoon and the watercolor was drying on my palette faster than I can put it on the paper. I wanted to do a smoother background but because of the heat I switched to a more active texture. I think it worked out OK because it created a little more balance in the picture. I used several washes since it was drying so quickly.

I feel I should have taken more time to develop the composition; this is an ongoing problem I have. Once you commit to a composition and if it is bad there is no amount of technique or skill that can redeem the picture.

I expect that I will return to this subject and paint these again.

Below is a reworking of the project to deepen the colors and to make it digital for the online market place.

Cone flowers hand made print by Adron

Cone Flowers Art.

Cone Flowers hand made print for sale.
I have always loved seeing these bright orange flowers in the summertime. It was a joy to design a print of some. It was a surprise at how hard it would be to get right.

This is a project took me three weeks to get right. It is a handmade print. I made plates for each color by cutting the shapes out of a foam material and gluing them to acrylic sheets. Each plate needed some adjusting and it took a long time to get the registration right, (where each plate matches up with the others). I made several test prints and each time had to make changes. It is finally what I had envisioned. The colors were very frustrating. The manufacturer didn't have a cerulean blue or an equivalent only a dark royal blue, so to get the blue field I had to use a very thin coat on the roller and like watercolor the paper would show through the ink. The color of the flowers was a challenge I found I had to double roll scarlet over orange.

I find that it takes me about a day to print 10 of these by traditional hand methods. It is a joy to see each one   when I pull the paper off of the last plate. I hope it will be a joy for others.

I redid this as a digital image for my society6 store. You can see it here.

SUNFLOWER HAND MADE PRINT 14X11

Sunflower Print by Artist Adron

This handmade print of a sunflower is a real beauty.

It takes 5 blocks to run a project like this one plate for each color. I carve the blocks by hand. With each new block I have to keep going back to make sure they will all register correctly so the picture won't have large gaps and huge color overlaps. I have to ink each block and print them individually on the paper and make sure they are dry before I go to the next color. Since I am doing these by hand it takes a long time. It took a day to print 10 and I had to discard two for smudges.

I have a revised version this in watercolor and acrylic at my online art store. You can see it here.

Garden Flowers In An Urn # 1

Here is a nice painting of mine for sale. Oil on 16 x 20 canvas. It is a floral done in a slightly impressionist style. These flowers are draping over an urn mounted in a wall.

I painted this in my basement studio.  It took several weeks. The paint is heavily applied and very textured. It is one of two that form a pair. The colors are warm.

It is one of my favorite paintings.

Size is 16 x 20. It is unframed.  Price is $250.00. Get in touch with me through the comments feature to arrange to see this in my basement studio or for a quote on shipping.

Painting of Maddy's Daisies, Titled: a Family Portrait of Daisies.

This oil painting of daisies was done in the spring of 2011. I set up my easel behind my house and painted the daisies that my daughter grew from seeds some years back. I did most of the painting outdoors and just a little touch up in my studio. Anyone can paint daisies in a vase but to do it outside and the flowers just growing wild is a little frightening. You don't know how to sort out all the leaves and the many petals, then you wrestle with which flower to leave out since some are beginning to wilt.

I didn't want it to be a painting of a garden so I left out much of the environment around the flowers. The background I reduced to a colored texture to give the impression space beyond. This is almost a portrait since I was focusing on only the daisies and trying to go beyond the physical to the significance of the flowers, so I call it a family portrait.

I really loved painting this, they have all gone to seed today but the image will live on.

It is not a very big painting only 11x14 but it has a calm peaceful atmosphere that goes far beyond its boundaries.

I am offering this painting for 100.00 unframed. Contact me via the comments feature to arrange a viewing or to get a quote on shipping. Framing is extra.
